What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate or same-day treatment. Common dental emergencies include:
- Broken or Dislodged Teeth
- Severe Tooth Pain
- Uncontrollable Bleeding
- Dental Abscess
- Loose Adult Teeth
- Lost Dental Restoration
What should I do if I lose a tooth?
Accidents that involve dislodged teeth can be highly stressful, but it’s important to act quickly to have the best chance of saving the tooth. After locating the tooth, pick it up by the crown (not the roots) and gently rinse it off before placing it back in the socket and biting down on a piece of gauze or clean cloth. If that’s too painful, the tooth can also be transported in a cup of milk or saliva. Then, get in touch with our office and make your way to our practice as quickly and safely as you can.
How can I be prepared for a dental emergency?
We always recommend that patients keep our practice number saved in their contacts in case they need to get in touch with our office right away. It’s also a good idea to keep a small first aid kit that contains important items like gauze and over-the-counter pain medication, just in case any dental-related injuries occur. Common household items like salt, garlic, and vanilla extract can also be used to numb tooth pain, so it’s not a bad idea to keep these items well stocked as well. Dental emergencies can be very unexpected, but it pays to be prepared!
