How To Take Care Of Your Dentures

March 12, 2025 9:00 am

Getting dentures is a big step toward restoring your smile and confidence. But to keep them comfortable and looking great, a little daily care goes a long way. Whether you’re new to dentures or just need a refresher, here’s how to keep them clean, fresh, and fitting well.

    1. Clean Your Dentures Daily

Just like natural teeth, dentures collect plaque and bacteria throughout the day. Regular cleaning twice a day helps keep them fresh and prevents bad breath.

What to do: Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive denture cleaner—never regular toothpaste, which can scratch the surface. Rinse thoroughly after meals to remove food debris.

    2. Soak Them Overnight

Dentures need moisture to keep their shape. Leaving them out in the open can cause them to dry out and warp.

What to do: Soak them overnight in a denture solution or plain water. Avoid hot water, which can damage the material.

    3. Handle With Care

Dentures may be strong, but they’re not indestructible. Dropping them can lead to cracks or breaks, leaving you without teeth until they’re repaired.

What to do: Clean them over a soft towel or bowl of water to cushion any falls. Always hold them gently when handling.

    4. Keep Your Gums and Mouth Healthy

Even with dentures, oral health still matters. Your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth need daily care to prevent infections and irritation.

What to do: Brush your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush to remove bacteria. Rinse with mouthwash for added freshness.

    5. Watch for Changes in Fit

Over time, your gums and jawbone can change shape, which may cause your dentures to feel loose or uncomfortable.

What to do: If they start slipping, rubbing, or causing sore spots, schedule an appointment for an adjustment. Never try to fix them yourself!
