Reducing Bacteria in Your Bathroom: Small Habits, Big Impact
April 21, 2025 9:00 amWe all know bathrooms can harbor germs, but did you know your oral care tools can be a hotspot for bacteria, too? Toothbrushes, countertops, and even where you store your floss can affect your health—especially your oral health.
Here are a few simple habits that can make a big difference.
Toothbrush Storage Matters
When you flush, tiny droplets can travel through the air—yes, even to your toothbrush. It’s called a toilet plume, and it’s a good reason to keep your brush far from the toilet.
Store your toothbrush upright in a holder, uncovered, and away from sinks or toilets. Let it air dry completely between uses. A damp brush in a closed container is an invitation for bacterial growth.
Replace Your Toothbrush
You should replace your toothbrush—or brush head—every three to four months. If you’ve been sick, swap it sooner. Frayed bristles don’t clean well and can trap more bacteria.
If you use an electric toothbrush, don’t forget to clean between the brush head and the handle. That area can trap moisture, toothpaste, and bacteria over time. Gently remove the head and rinse both parts regularly. Also wipe around the charger base—grime tends to collect where the handle sits.
No matter what kind of brush you use, let it air dry and store it upright. A wet toothbrush in a sealed case isn’t doing your mouth any favors.
Wipe Down That Countertop
Bathroom surfaces collect more than just water. Keep the area where you store dental tools clean and dry. Avoid placing floss or mouthwash bottles too close to the toilet. If you use a toothbrush holder, wash it regularly—gunk builds up quickly.
